Ditch Cave-In at Phillips Power Station Kills One

Pittsburgh December 22 One worker was killed and another seriously injured in a ditch cave in at the Phillips power station of Duquesne Light Co at Grenwillard Charles Powell 41 of Pittsburgh an employee of Dick Construction Co suffocated when a five foot ditch collapsed. William E Jones Jr of suburban Avalon suffered a possible fracture of the pelvis and other injuries.

Large Cony area group to report for draft physical tests

About 38 area youths are summoned for pre induction physicals as part of the first postwar reactivated draft to journey from Harrisburg to New Cumberland. The group departs January 3 at 11 p m to arrive January 4 at 4 20 a m, with routing via Pennsylvania Railroad and Corry.

Tri-Hi-Y Drives Gifts for Seven Orphans After Fire

Sophomore Tri-Hi-Y of Corry High School starts a drive to aid seven orphans left homeless when the Warren County orphanage burned early Thursday. Girls ages 10 to 16 and boys ages 6 to 11 need clothing and toys. Residents can contribute by calling Blatt Howsett or Kelsey or using a collection box at Superior Dry Cleaning. The drive ends next Saturday to deliver items before Christmas.

Salvation Army Plans Sunshine Baskets Outreach

Salvation Army groups will visit hospitals and rest homes in Corry North East Spartansburg and Union City tomorrow afternoon to distribute Sunshine Baskets with candy and fruit. Music will accompany the delivery with a girls trio two accordionists and two guitarists. A Christmas Dinner for aged persons is arranged at the Farrington residence on West Main Street with Mr. Farrington providing transport.

Mercury Dives to Ten Above After 43 High

The city suffered a rapid temperature drop from 43 degrees to 10 above as strong winds hampered snow and slush clearance.
