Washington reports say the administration aims for peace while defending it if needed. Officials dismissed war talk about new Pacific bases and naval/air buildup, signaling no immediate race to expand fleets until 1936 as treaties near expiry.
Herman P Miller, librarian of the State Senate, began as a Senate page in 1875 and served through multiple administrations. He recalls Pattison inaugurations and will attend Gov. George H. Earle's induction on January 16, noting dramatic changes in ceremonies and transportation. More than 26 000 visitors expected for the Harrisburg event. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. for former Sharon burgess Prarcid F Davis, 90, who died of heart disease.
Joseph Lewandowski a 44 year old World War II veteran confessed to killing Bath widow Mrs George H Parker. He gave a 500 word statement citing jealousy and told District Attorney George H Pratt. Lewandowski was arraigned before Justice with the case continued on page two.
A passerby spotted a blaze at the four story Allen House Hotel in Torrington Connecticut early today. Police and fire crews evacuated guests as the wave of flames spread and a general alarm drew Winsted apparatus. Leon Bescher Capt Peter Bourquin John Richardson James Wheeler among those injured or rescued as guests escaped and firefighters battled the stairwell blaze.
An East Columbus Avenue man driving a new Studebaker and Mrs Will Dingfelder in a second car collided on Roosevelt Highway just west of the State Wish Hatchery last evening. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage but occupants escaped injury.
Two Corry boys Hoffman and Shufflebeam, about fifteen, were picked up by police at Sharon in the evening. They were wandering the streets and identified after questioning by a patrolman. Chief Burgingame notified their parents and authorities expect their return home.
Moscow reports that thirteen former leaders of the Communist movement are held for trial before the military collegium of the supreme court for a direct charge that the assassination of Serge Kirov was ordered by the Zinoviev Trotsky opposition. The court may act under emergency dictatorship powers, with secret trials and no right to appeal. Zinoviev and Kamenev’s status remains officially unconfirmed.
The Board of Education has received no decision yet on advancing the Vocational School project, part of the school relief program. Board members hope for definite approval from the RWD before year end, following a request to Erie RWD offices for immediate action. The project would employ about eighty men full time and around thirty part time.
Four men and women brought from Erie Pennsylvania faced arraignment in police court on first degree grand larceny charges in a fur theft ring. Each was ordered held on ten thousand dollars bail. Names include Anthony F Tramatto Chicago Mrs Anna Weber Cambridge Mass Mrs Evelyn Nolan Cleveland and Mrs Lillian Weber New York City. A Chicago bail arranger was said to be arranging bail for Anna Weber.
Allegheny county relief moves to cash basis after January 1 as state emergency relief board directs local administration. Eric H. Biddle announced the plan, noting Philadelphia already operates cash relief and the change aims to unify statewide relief methods.
Four Canonsburg High School youths died when their car was struck by an eastbound Pennsylvania passenger train at Central avenue crossing. Fern Harris and Jean Marshall, both 16, Kenneth Culp 18, and William McKee 17 perished after a dance at Canonsburg Junior High. The car was dragged about 200 yards along the track.
In Harrisburg at the Democratic caucus117 members planned to elect speaker candidates as the party forms its first House majority in 40 years. Rep Wilson G Surig Berks is endorsed for speaker while Charles J Margiotti leads planning for constitutional revision and inauguration arrangements for George H Earle.
Robert Mais, Philadelphia’s public enemy No 1, remains at large despite a raid on a Riveride New Jersey hangout by federal agents. Mais leads a gang that robbed the Philadelphia Electric Company of $48,000 and is linked to the kidnapping and murder of William Wells. R. George Harvey stated clues emerged but details were not disclosed during the pursuit.
Thomas E. Earl a 60 year old North East paving contractor was killed when his car was struck by a fast New York Central trail train on Lake Street crossing. The auto was torn in two and Hart’s body lay about 100 feet from the crossing.
Two Erie county liquor-license hearings, including Corry case, will be heard by Judge U P Rossiter in Erie on Monday December 21. Miss Anna Carnegie, owner of the Commercial restaurant at 32 East Main Street, challenges state agents seeking license denial citing her father as real proprietor. Another defendant, Tred J Wright of 102 Main Street, Guard, faces a denial claim for permitting slot machines, with broader enforcement expected to affect many current licensees.
The Canadian cruiser Fleur De Lis reported finding the missing schooner Shiley B Corkum at sea. The cruiser took a line aboard and began towing the vessel to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, as of today December 22.
A White Sulpher Springs conference of about 90 business leaders urged consolidation of business into an effective force influencing government. The group sought a nonconcilatory approach to the New Deal, planning a committee to push the idea while awaiting a possible White House meeting with President Roosevelt. In Tampa a love triangle ended with two deaths and a man killing his ex-wife’s new partner before his own suicide. Nearby Bracknald, Ohio, a slugging followed by a car theft occurred at a restaurant. Ambridge, Pennsylvania, a gas station robbery left a clerk unconscious and cash stolen.
Extra cars and second sections were required to handle the heavy pre Christmas rush on trains through Corry today as the holiday congestion became the heaviest in years. Rail officials expect passenger business 10 to 25 percent above recent years. Mell and express business peaked Friday as the holiday mail volume rose at the transfer station with ten heavily loaded trucks sighted Thursday night. An extra work force kept mail moving promptly with promise of complete delivery of holiday matter.
Gloria Vanderbilt came home for the holidays as custody litigation over a $3,000,000 trust between her mother Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt and her aunt Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney played out. The child, seen leaving a limousine with a purse and detective, generated cheers from onlookers while a court order sent her to stay with her mother for the weekend and Christmas Day.
In Bridgeton on December 22 three men were jailed on $1000 bonds each after police described an advertising racket. Victims from Pennsylvania and New Jersey paid about $200,000 for space in allegedly deceptive traffic and tourist guides. Those held include Whandeus Wickards, 35, Jesse Jones, 30, both from Philadelphia, and Joseph Garey, a Camden pharmacist.
