Firestone Reports New High In Sales And Earnings
Firestone Tire and Rubber Co reports record sales of 1,318,049,301 and earnings of 83,384,604 for the fiscal year ended October 31 1963. Chair Harvey S Firestone Jr and President Raymond S Tone cite sales gains in most divisions driven by expanded auto tire production and higher vehicle use. capital expenditures reached 94.85 million with depreciation at 52.45 million. Net working capital rose to 488.9 million. new tire plants in Decatur Illinois and Salinas California, plus Bangkok expansion and Hopewell textile nylon yarn production marked the year. The firm also expanded Firestone Portuguesa stake in Alcochete Portugal.

SP Detective Promoted and Transferred to Troop C
Lawrence Park based SP Detective Lewis Penman has been promoted to Detective Sergeant and reassigned to Troop C Punxsutawney. Announced by State Police Commissioner E Wilson Purdy, Penman’s career spans the Erie Area since 1982 with a brief Intelligence Division service in 1959 60. He helped steer many Troop E cases including the Mary Lynn Crotty murder, now solved with the killer imprisoned for life. Penman will assume the new role immediately but remain in Erie until after Christmas.

Five Miners Die in Taipei Coal Explosion
Five miners were killed in a coal mine explosion near suburban Taipei yesterday. Rescue teams cordoned off the scene as officials investigated the cause and assessed safety practices following the disaster.

John Augustine 60 dies after brief illness in Spartansburg
John Augustine died at his Spartansburg R D 3 home after a brief illness. He was born August 10, 1903 in Iowa and was 60. He married Ella Birky on February 26, 1931. Surviving are his wife, his father Simon, a son Eugene, a daughter Phyllis Holthouse, three grandchildren, three sisters including Mrs. Troyer, Mrs. Stoltzius, and Mrs. Saltzman. H Richard Hays Funeral Home in Spartansburg is handling arrangements which are incomplete today and will be announced later.
