A Seaboard Air Line Silver Star passenger train collided with a tractor trailer loaded with oranges northwest of Okeechobee Florida killing three people and injuring seventeen others. The lead locomotive derailed, two engines burned, and a large track section was torn up. Identified dead are H O Slaughter 50 of Wildwood baggage master William Bell 50 of Tampa fireman and O B Jones 38 of Haines City the truck driver. Seventeen hospitalized most passengers en route for Christmas with five more treated.
State Police investigated two accidents from Monday and yesterday on icy roads. John Lloyd, 55, of 601 Shady Avenue, and Jack W. Zeller, 35, Erie, were involved in a two car collision on an icy Hatchery Road hill with $295 total damage and no injuries. A second crash on State Line road east of Wattsburg involved Larry Stanbro of Erie and Elmer Simpson, 53, Union City, with Simpson reporting $150 damage. Stanbro is not yet questioned as investigators continue.
Congressmen elect James D. Weaver invites residents of Mercer Crawford and Erie counties to apply for four U S service academies. Judge Samuel Rossiter told Russell E. Bemis that a Erie County newspaper says he is no good. Bemis, 24, has long been in local policing reports. The matter concerns two charges with consecutive sentencing possible, vs concurrent terms already imposed. He faces 23 months total in jail if time off for good behavior applies.
The Corry born Bemis now in Youngsville awaits sentencing on false pretense. Listed charges span 1957 to 1961 including juvenile delinquency larceny fraud and cheating by pretense with additional alleged crimes in Corry. Police note more cases exist in other communities.
The state traffic safety commissioner urged motorists to drive alert sober and patient on highways over the holidays. He warned that failure to observe safety rules could cause record traffic casualties following the Christmas Weekend last year which saw twenty three fatalities during a 78 hour period.

A second major fire in under three weeks struck Wheeling Downs Race Track destroying the grandstand and causing heavy damage to stands and administration. Five fire companies fought for hours while high winds hampered efforts. No definite injuries reported.
Andrew Paulson directed the Stanford Hose Co. for 3 years and received a life membership this week. He retired from volunteering in 1952 after serving since before World War I and as chief since 1916. The award marks one of several life memberships in the city.
