Reports from London say British forces lost contact with Hong Kong as Japanese forces press the assault on the colony. Cavite Bombed and Panay Raid Reported

Japanese bombers attacked Manila area twice breaching Cavite naval base and targets on Luzon including Panay. The Far Eastern command reported 34 planes in the first group and nine in the second while U.S. submarines reportedly damaged an enemy transport and possibly a destroyer. A separate Panay raid was noted with ongoing Japanese actions in Luzon and Mindanao areas.

Fatally Hurt As Auto Upsets At Beaverdam

Slarente Bates, 34, died at Corry hospital about 9:45 after an automobile left the highway and overturned near the Lynatii home on the Beaverdam road. He sustained a crushed chest punctured lung and a fracture of the left shoulder. Death came about six hours after arrival at the hospital. Bates had been en route from Wattsport to a Beaverdam dinner sing. The car skidded on a curve and struck a stump, overturning and wrecking the vehicle. Private John Barnicle and Deputy Coroner R. Laura Ingalls, famed aviator with record speed crossings, was held in the District of Columbia today on a charge of failing to register as a paid agent of the German government. Singapore December 19 British reports say the Japanese drive in northern Malaya has slowed after heavy resistance and bombardment. Penang has been abandoned by British defenders as Japanese forces pushed about 100 miles inland in western Malaya. The front along the northern Malayan coast was quiet, with strong indications of further thrusts across the border toward Ipoh and the heart of Malay industrial power.
