Corry schools will not close Monday as rumors claimed. Fractured absences rose slightly on Friday with several teachers out sick, but city schools will reopen Monday and close Tuesday afternoon for Christmas vacation, following reports of closures in nearby towns.
Reports say Allied forces push on Italian front while Penneysylvania Gas Co expands lines and sources to avert a winter shortage. Local fears arose over curtailment as crews add an eight inch pipeline and blend new gas supplies with natural gas to meet heavy industrial and domestic demand.
By Associated Press New Orleans December 18 At least 26 soldiers wearing life preservers died yesterday when their 72 foot cruiser type vessel overturned in Lake Pontchartrain in one of the worst marine disasters here since the turn of the century. An official investigation was launched. Most bodies believed trapped beneath the overturned hull or canopy. Captain T F Reece said 65 soldiers and three civilians who operated the vessel were being treated for injuries. Four soldiers were in serious condition. Casualty figures not announced.
Union City woman Mrs. Few dies after a car driven by BL Kimmey veered off Route 8 on the Wattsbury road. The wreck injured Kimmey and severely damaged the vehicle. Mrs. Few was taken to Union City Hospital where she died at about 6:39 a.m. Kimmey, a former Corry resident, contacted authorities and the coroner’s office to plan an investigation.
Across the China front Major General Claire L. Chennault reports Japan decisively defeated in the Tungting Lake area as about 10,000 troops attempt to extricate. In Cairo the Yugoslav exile says Neubacher is negotiating with Hungary on troop withdrawals from Russia to Yugoslavia. In London partisans counterattack as influenza deaths rise to a new weekly high. In Monongahela, six people die and another injured when a Pittsburgh Brownsville train hits a car at Courtney Crossing.
A Corry Senior High student left home on King street at midnight after running away to avoid his parents who sought him following a day of absence. He climbed to a second floor window and jumped to a porch roof before fleeing. Police were unable to locate him by morning.

Seven year old Johnny Bush of Wattsbury was struck by a car driven by Lawrence Tompkins of Clymer as he crossed pavement near his home after exiting the school bus. He suffered a fractured femur and a compound tibia fracture, transported to Hamel hospital Erie for care. Police estimate the crash unavoidable. no charges expected.
American troops rout Nazi forces along the Liri valley reaching the outskirts of San Pietro near Cassino. They seized the Helahite position and advanced toward the Cassino line as part of the drive to break the Nazi defense in central Italy. The advance includes air and naval support and marks a significant push toward Rome.
