The Republican National Committee selected Cleveland as its 1940 convention city and received a certified check for 150000 to cover expenses. Chicago and Kansas City had offered similar funds but did not present checks. Cleveland backers argued the state party's GOP heritage strengthens the bid.
An explosion at about 1:30 this morning gutted the two story grocery building owned by Bracken Brothers at 117 First Avenue. Four Corry youths aged 13 to 15 were found stealing coal from a car in the West End yards of the Erie Railroad Saturday night. They admitted the act, were taken to police, and released pending railroad authorities' further inquiry. names withheld due to age.
In Lenewsburg Pennsylvania on December 16 Jaci Gusik a former business manager for Al Capone in Chicago was released after three years and seven months of a five year term for income tax evasion. Warden Harry C Hill said Gusik planned to return to Chicago.
Harry Fennell 42 of Culmerville Pa admits firing the shot that killed Kane businessman Arthur Carlson as he stood over a deer he had shot during the opening of the antlerless season. State police traced the abandoned gun to Fennell and he was arrested for possible manslaughter and hunting license revocation. He was to be taken to Tioga for possible prosecution.
District officials reported sufficient receipts from taxes tuition fees and a state allocation to cover mid December obligations including payrolls. A special session was planned to authorize borrowing but may be cancelled with no new borrowing arrangements.
A driver paid a $25 fine plus costs after a Friday evening crash at the First Avenue and West Main Street intersection. The machine owned by Peter Giron sustained heavy damage. Louis Beardsley and another vehicle were involved. Aldermen George H Gordon oversaw the matter as the case proceeded.

Hochmuth, 80, testified during the Lindbergh kidnapping trial that Hauptmann’s car skidded into a ditch near the Lindbergh home. The witness later said his eyesight limited his ability to work.
Lock Haven police held Raymond Simcox 21 of Tylersville Pa on charges of trying to rob Loganton National Bank to obtain money to marry his sweetheart Sally Tolad of Goudersport Pa. The attempt ended when the burglar alarm triggered and he fled after firing at the assistant cashier W J Meyer.
Havana reports Nicholas Castano, a wealthy sugar mill owner, was kidnapped for a $300,000 ransom and later found unharmed by the army. The recovery ends a high profile incident involving a prominent Cuban industrialist.
