Basney's Only Flat Rats Left on Tiny Island
NORTH ISLAND MICH AP Basney and wife Bernetha are the last of the flat rats living on a tiny Lake St Clair island 25 miles southeast of Detroit. They trap about 1000 muskrats a year selling meat to restaurants and pelts to fur dealers for $2 each while relying on a citizen band radio to stay connected. They face isolation and yearly icebound winters with only six inches of water separating their home from floodwaters, recalling lean times when they ate pancakes and jelly.
