Inland Rails Brought Mighty War Barges to Sea
Army Navy and Marine Corps solved a problem by moving large invasion barges inland by rail. Boats capable of carrying 50 men and a tank were built far from the coast and then transported to sea, with railroads like the Erie allowing the broad clearances needed for these ships to reach their final destination. Veterans of Algiers and Guadalcanal are cited as examples of the vessels’ reach and scale.
