A three story Beckham Hotel in Greenville was rocked by a violent blast last night. One body was found in the ruins and a registered guest, Joshua B. Carter of Celeste, Texas, is confirmed dead. One other person remains missing. Fifteen elderly residents were among guests. three dozen others were hospitalized or treated for cuts and shock. Gas had been cut off within two blocks. Firefighters battled ice and water as cries and smoke filled the area.
Firis Bununyn yonn mee Dowell former Republican congressman and weekly newspaper editor shot himself last night near his Wilkinsburg home. Lt Wallen Edinger said the death appears by his own action. Dowell, 58, had health issues and was found on his front porch after family heard a gunshot. Dowell was elected to Congress in 1998 and served for years. he was on the House Un-American Activities Committee and known for Alger Hiss related matters.
Harrisburg report says Governor to convene a special session on education reform inviting public figures to discuss expanding the school year from about 160 days toward 200 plus days. Boehm advocates 220 day target as a possible goal amid broader push for improved classroom time.

A two car head on crash at the Route 97 and 1H intersection near Waterford yesterday at 10 p m sent three people to the hospital and caused about 1000 dollars in damage. A 1906 sedan driven by 28 year old Goynell Sochn of Titusville traveling south on Route 19 collided with Virgita Blan 48 of Meadville and Mrs Blair. Sochn suffered a severe lip laceration and loss of two teeth. A passenger in her car Mrs William Dalton 39 had a bruised forehead. Three year old Janie Blair was cut by glass. All were removed to Erle hospital for treatment.
Retail merchants publish extended nighttime hours for the Christmas season. From now until Christmas Eve stores stay open nightly until late, with closing at 6 30 p.m on the 24th to let employees spend Christmas Eve with families.
Crews from Troquois Gas Co hunt a four inch line leak between Mayville and Chautauqua after a morning discovery near the Chautauqua Institution. About 300 homes on the line may be affected as gas dissipates through a drainage tube under cold, stormy conditions.
Corry Moose Lodge launches Operation Santa Claus to collect new and used toys for local children. Donors may leave items at the Moose Club. Salvation Army and local ministers assist with identifying recipients for distribution before Christmas. Over five years residents have enabled about 3100 toys to be given.
Richard Ferma 17 and Larry Bisbee 24 both of Union City were found near Marienville after a search by State Police from the Ti-onesta substation and forest rangers. Luther Fenn 19 had triggered the search when the trio failed to return as dusk fell. The men, who found shelter with Pittsburgh hunters, were located this morning after daylight.
