Florence County authorities report eight bodies found near a site where six were unearthed last week. A seventh body removed Tuesday appeared to be a woman in her early 20s, and a child was identified near the woman. Officers continue digging as murder charges are filed against three men in three deaths.
The Associated Press reports a broad cold front pushing south into the central plains and northern U.S. Temperatures plummet to teens in the northern plains and below zero in northern Minnesota while Kansas and Missouri stay in the 40s and 50s. Clouds stretch from the Rockies to the Atlantic coast with snow in Montana and western Dakotas.
Pennsylvania employment data show the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 9.7 percent in October to 9.4 percent, with about 439,000 people jobless, down roughly 5,000 from the prior month. The rate remains well above the 5.9 percent level reported for November 1974.
Heinz reports net earnings up 10.5 percent for the second quarter and first half of its 1976 fiscal year. Q2 net $19.2 million or $1.26 per share on $464 million sales, vs $17.3 million or $1.14 on $450.9 million a year ago. Half-year net $32 million or $2.11 per share on $896.3 million, vs $28.9 million or $1.91 on $941.3 million.
