Independent businessmen favor sales tax to replace property taxes

A survey in 15 states shows independent business people largely want property taxes cut and support a sales tax to replace lost revenue. Voters and politicians nationwide echo the view, though merchants warn a sales tax adds overhead to operations. In surveys the favor rate ranges from 60 to 75 percent.

Higher sales tax favored by independent business people

It is believed the sales tax is favored by independent business people who think current real estate taxes are progressively making home ownership difficult especially for the elderly. A perceived advantage is that a sales tax is a straight tax, not hidden. Pennsylvania was not among the 15 states in the survey. The six percent rate in the Commonwealth, second highest in the nation, would make any increase hard to justify even for property tax reduction.
