AP reports a major Soviet leadership shuffle elevating Nikolai Podgorny to the presidency and moving Alexander Shelepin to a high party post. Anastas Mikoyan, at seventy, steps from the presidency due to health but remains in the party presidium. Brezhnev and Kosygin keep top posts as changes gain approval by the Supreme Soviet.
City police investigate a nighttime burglary at Bayles Restaurant on South Center Street. Nearly $200 in cash vanished from the register and a bank bag under the counter. no forced entry or pry marks were found. Owner William Bayle and cook Marguerite Culver provided timing details and described the locked doors.
Tests show today’s children are quicker and more agile than seven years ago. A 12 year old boy can run the 50 yard dash faster by about two tenths of a second and throw a softball farther. Broad jump distances also improved across the state.

Cpl. John Hornick of the Corry State Police witnessed a two-car encounter on Route 77 five miles west of Spartansburg at 5:15 yesterday. Laurence Scouten, 35, of Spartansburg, and another vehicle were slowing to pass the parked cars when James Weaver, 39, of Frewsburg, failed to stop and struck the Scouten auto. No injuries reported. Scouten car damage listed at 75 dollars.
A program to present 30 mobile units to United Cerebral Palsy for use in Erie County and surrounding counties by 1970 is announced. Richard Williams and Thomas Bean of the Elks are cited, with a Sony donation aiding local handicapped children.
In South Viet Nam heavy U S and South Vietnamese forces clash with a Viet Cong regiment near two Marine beachheads. Artillery and jets hammer positions as casualties mount on both sides in a central coast engagement. Britain proposes a 12 nation appeal to North Viet Nam to quit fighting and negotiate peace. The draft message to the Soviet government accuses Hanoi of increasing intervention and supplies to the Viet Cong.
U S reports describe a prestige battle as Viet Cong defend ground 15 miles north of Tam Ky. Two U S advisers were killed with four missing while air power of 206 tons and 397 sorties pounded targets as ground probes continued near Saigon and villages were cleared.
Houston AP reports Frank Borman aboard Gemini 7 sneezed during a report to Houston control. The tracking ship Coastal Sentry logged three or four sneezes as the spacecraft orbited, with Borman offering no comment.
Two Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital doctors resigned at the request of the hospital board after postoperative deaths blamed on a faulty anesthesia mix. The Oakland County prosecutor found gross negligence but no criminal wrongdoing. The joint school committee reorganizes with mostly familiar faces, Columbus lacking a quorum, and new member Carroll Crowell replacing Charles Kennedy as president.
Police report snowballing at a greenhouse on Essex street and sledding on King street near Concord School. Officers rounded up boys, warned parents, and warned again after a fatality years ago to keep sledders off streets and driveways.
Two 18 year old Corry youths suffered injuries when their car left Camp Flats Road east of the city, struck a pole and tree. Robert May and McCray were taken to Corry Memorial Hospital with May admitted. police investigate cause.
