Pressure rose for a global oil embargo against Rhodesia as African members of the Commonwealth urged a tough sanctions resolution. Britain weighed a limited oil ban but favored an enforceable export ban. South Africa warned it would maintain normal trade with Rhodesia. Amish Flee for Central America in Quest to Preserve Faith
A small Arkansas Mennonite group of eight families led by Harold Stoll plans to move from the Ozarks to British Honduras via New Orleans, Mexico City, and a Central American jungle to escape modern materialism. They shun electricity and public schools, insist on simple living, and will farm with horse power on land bought in 1949. Some members are saddened, but elders say the move is necessary to uphold their religious beliefs. The group has sold most of its 1,200 acres, with $50 an acre land value this fall.
