Representatives from six cities said second class districts are underfunded by the legislature and state. Dr Joth Albohmn of York was authorized to call a statewide meeting of all 29 second class districts next March as the new legislature convenes and Gov-elect Scranton outlines his school fiscal policy. Joseph F. Hanley age 69 a former Brooklyn district attorney investigator who helped direct the 1940 Murder Inc destruction probe died yesterday in New York City. He had left a law practice to oversee the inquiry and later held public posts.
In Carmichaels Pennsylvania an explosion trapped 37 miners 650 feet underground at Robena No 3 mine. Rescue teams report slow progress as methane gas and fires hinder operations in the vast three section complex near Clairton Works. A body was found on day three and families wait amid ongoing ventilation and safety challenges.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower joined cadet Colin P. Kelly of West Point at a National Association of Manufacturers luncheon in New York. They sang On Brave Old Army Team and Kelly dedicated The Corps to Eisenhower. Eisenhower praised Kelly for winning his appointment on merit despite a family wartime legacy and noted Kelly plans to remain in the Army in the armored forces.
The eighth unsolved slaying of a Greater Boston woman in six months shocks residents. Margaret Cadigan 17 a runner up in a 1962 Catholic Youth Organization queen contest was found dead in the Winthrop home where she lived. Her body showed strangulation or head immersion with a knife wound and a pajama bottom tied at the neck. A medical examiner was to decide the cause of death.
Residents of northern Ohio and western Pennsylvania clear debris after a major blizzard. At least 38 storm deaths reported, 16 in Ohio. Up to 27 inches of snow, drifts to 20 feet. 5,000 vehicles stalled on a 10 mile Ohio stretch. 2,000 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Power outages affected 49,000 homes. shelters set up and aid arriving.
The pre-winter storm clipped northwestern Pennsylvania western New York and northern Ohio leading to traffic snarls and school closures. The Weather Bureau forecasts continued cold with scattered snow showers as rural and city roads stay hazardous and drifts form. Snow totals reach 10 to 15 inches with high winds adding to closures. Weather officials warn winter begins December 21.
A state chamber of commerce meeting in Erie on Tuesday will preview 1968 legislative issues under the theme The Businessman and the 1963 Legislature. Speakers include Robert Hibbard on the state budget and taxes, Nevin Schall on education and school reorganization, and Lowden Campbell on unemployment and labor. Attending from Corry are A. Long, Lloyd Stowe, Delias Smiley, Dorr Clark, Frank Dodd and George R. Sample.
A two car collision on Route 23 west of New Holland killed 24 year old Rena Mae Kilower of Lancaster and injured her husband Robert 26 and another man Ray D Keller who drove the second car. Police said ice caused one car to skid into the opposite lane.
Corry Area High School projects about 740 students in the Senior High next fall, with average class sizes around 40 in 18 regular rooms and one special room. Junior High enrollment should ease to 713, down from 749, as crowding prompts planning for new facilities in nearby districts.
Col Guy C Rexroad a 77 year old former soldier penologist educator and legislator died in a hospital yesterday. His career included directing the Kansas pill system and leading a federal prison at Lewisburg after 1955 with World War II service as commander of staging areas in Boston and San Francisco for troop movements.
A cylindrical uranium slug once used by U.S. Representative James E. Van Zandt as a campaign prop went missing after his loss in the November 6 Senate bid. Aides confirm the item, reported harmless, was last seen in Washington after being shipped to his office earlier.
