Coal Miners Ready For Possible Strike
In Pittsburgh 1500 UMW delegates moved to form a first ever strike fund and gave rank and file power to approve contracts. They warn of a possible six month strike next year if demands are unmet as wage, benefit issues are pressed ahead before a 1974 contract.

Erie County Treasurer Sues Over Union
Erie County Treasurer Neil McLaughlin sued the Erie County Board of Commissioners and the county labor union over last summer’s contract. He argues the commissioners bypassed his authority by negotiating with the Erie County Chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and hired a $50 an hour consulting firm without his involvement. He objects to a clause forcing him to hire county workers from other offices to fill his vacancies if qualified. His filing aligns with prior suits by District Attorney R. Gordon Kennedy and Register of Wills Roger M. Fischer. McLaughlin’s attorney may join those suits in Commonwealth Court or the Pennsylvania Supreme Court proceedings.
