Calley grilled by panel in My Lai massacre inquiry
First Lt William L Calley Jr faced a 2% hour session before a Pentagon panel probing whether field officers concealed facts after the March 1968 My Lai operation. Calley, the only suspect charged with murder, remained silent as Capt Ernest Medina testified he neither ordered nor witnessed a massacre. Deputy Defense Secretary Packard and Gen Westmoreland defended the Army, stressing due process and that the incident does not indict all soldiers. Senator Dodd announced a resolution to fund My Lai reconstruction and survivor payments.

Spring Creek Site Considered for Warren County Landfill
State Health Department officials say a Spring Creek Township site, formerly a gravel pit, appears acceptable for a landfill to ease Warren County solid waste disposal. The privately owned 100 plus acre parcel would be run by the owner with an engineer to plan operations and a transfer station near Warren to cut haul costs. If approved, the site could serve Crawford and Erie Counties with intercounty waste passage arranged by agreement.

South Viets CAN Defend Own Country
Washington AP Deputy Defense Secretary David Packard says South Vietnam can defend its country, allowing continued U S troop withdrawals while enemy infiltration rises. He notes North Vietnamese thrusts possible but says commanders are prepared, with U S forces under 480,000 and a goal to fall below 150,000 eventually. Packard cites increased infiltration and uncertain exact figures, warning the enemy will keep up pressure as U S withdrawals proceed.
