100 Veterans Placed on Farms in Pennsylvania
The State Department of Agriculture reports about 100 World War II veterans were placed on Pennsylvania farms in one month, mostly as hired hands and some as farmers. From January 1 to September 80 this year, about 11,644 workers were placed, far above 1946 levels, reflecting farm worker shortages and farmers competing with higher industry wages. Harvest season in September and October boosted temporary hiring for apples, corn, and other crops.

Ban Exporting of American Coal
Washington December 5 export of coal grades commonly used in American homes was banned with immediate effect by the U S Coal Operating Committee. The embargo aims to assure domestic supplies of lump and double screened coal, increasing domestic availability by about 500000 tons monthly with negligible effect on total foreign shipments, as little of this coal is shipped overseas due to breakage during shipment.
