The Senate voted 48-1 to raise Pennsylvania teachers salaries by $200 a year now and another $200 in eight years, part of a $56 million bill tied to budget cuts and new taxes. The United States demanded the release of four American airmen after their plane, a 007, was shot down by Soviet fighters over western Hungary on November 19. Ambassador George Abbott, heading the U S mission, presented the note to Hungarian Foreign Minister Kardly Kiss and said the request would be forwarded to the appropriate Hungarian authority. Abbott spoke to newsmen after the meeting.
William S. Edminster, father of five, was shot and killed while hunting on state grounds near Richmond town. He died from a spinal injury after a heavy bullet struck him during a deer hunt. Joseph Davis found the body at 10:20 a.m. as investigators opened a probe with Crawford County coroner and game officials. Bettes, D. Armour Hillstrom, and Robert Ott Jr to replace former members. The board also reappointed solicitor Frank Metnight at 300 dollars annual salary. New board makeup lists Bethe, Armour Hillstrom, Jones, Monroe, Ott, Sebstead and Hubert Vaughn.
City 10 council last night discussed obtaining estimates to supply and install wiring for new fire alarm boxes along East Columbus Avenue near the east city limits. The project may exceed bid advertising limits, so the clerk will seek bids if required. Council also heard Joseph Cohen discuss water seepage at North Center Street Woolworth building and requested Ajax officials fix an eaves trough to the east side. possible summer alley work was floated to reduce drainage. Additional actions included fund transfers, per capita tax adjustments, final approval of a Marion Street sidewall grade ordinance, and Mead Park Association reports. Four members attended. Mayor Kinley was absent.
Youn st sam 38 Sparitenburg was ordered to attend three hearings at 4 30 this afternoon on an assault and battery charge preferred by Donald Pier driver for City Cab Co. Tinko appeared at city police station after learning a warrant was issued for his arrest. He pleaded not guilty before Alderman M J Cobbed and posted 100 bail to await today’s hearing. Pier alleges the assault followed a narrowly avoided auto collision near the east city line on Route 6.
United Nations and Allied forces launched a surprise amphibious assault on eastern Korean coast around Tachon, dislodging Red coastal transports amid heavy gunfire. British commandos and U.S. Marines reported casualties and naval support evacuated civilians as jets and ships aided the operation.
In Baghdad Iraq on December 4 Iran reportedly will not recognize the fresh Syrian government formed after a coup led by Colonel Abid Shisekly. The official paper of Premier Said’s party says Iran endorses recognition of the ousted Dawwallbi government, whose fall followed a palace meeting with regents Zald.

Two residents of Erie suffered injuries when a 1950 convertible crashed into a Centerville bridge at 6 0slock this morning. George Mehler in fair condition and Alice Terlecki in good condition were taken to Titusville Hospital. Terlecki was driving the car which had just been purchased days earlier. Mehler sustained a fractured right arm and internal injuries.
Edwin A. James, managing editor of the New York Times for 19 years and a longtime staff member, died here last night. He had been on a part time basis after kidney surgery in August and suffered a heart attack in June.
Two 14 year old Rechever youths were held by city police and to be returned to Falconer on charges of theft of a truck. Edward E. Wels and Nicholas Don Troiano were apprehended at Corry Memorial Hospital after a collision and a hospital visit. They reportedly admitted taking the truck from David Ungierber, a produce dealer, but denied related hit and run charges. They and the damaged truck were held for New York authorities.
Cairo reports erupting fighting in the Suez area after a British gas station blast. Egyptian officials and newspapers cite casualties with figures: Egyptians and British killed or missing, with police and civilians also listed among losses.
Three men died when a United Airlines DC-3 training plane crashed three miles northeast of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal shortly after takeoff from Stapleton Municipal Airfield. A UAL spokesman could not identify the dead pending flight records. The crash followed a Lowry Air Force Base B-24 bomber crash in Denver, killing eight airmen. Derby lies just north of Denver.

Pittsburgh December 4. Steel wage negotiations resumed with the CIO United Steelworkers laying groundwork for a new industry campaign. Negotiators for the union and U S Steel Corp held three day recess before resuming bargaining sessions as union sources said EW will press high bids to shape new contracts across various plants of the same company.
