British attorney general Sir Hartley Shawcross led a 30,000 word opening at Nuremberg accusing Hermann Goering Rudolf Hess Joachim von Ribbentrop and the Nazi leadership of planning and waging aggressive war against the world. He argued the aggression violated Armistice law and international norms, tracing German moves from Hitler's rise to power and the breach of treaties.
