Fragmentary police report describes an 18 year old involved in a beating case. The record notes a cooling off period, possible voluntary arrest, and a pending plea, with authorities delaying further details for mental health evaluation.
Washington reports that the Justice Department will enforce a 40 percent reduction in pep pill production next year. BNDD head John E. Ingersoll says the cut follows a HEW backed recommendation from the National Institute of Mental Health. An missing report delayed final quotas as three agencies met to set 1972 limits under the 1970 act.
Moscow bulletin reports a U S Embassy official saying American and Soviet scientists will sign a joint manned space flight agreement within two months. The accord was discussed in Moscow during the latest sessions between NASA and the Soviet Academy of Sciences, the third such meeting.
The Corry Area School District board of education will hold its first organizational meeting Monday night. Members elected from former districts will organize and elect officers from both districts and two new directors. Incumbents James H. Bennett James D. Howard William H. Kafferlin Roger Lansberry Melvin E. Messenger Robert G. Nichols Rexford G. Webb will attend, with new directors Mrs. Louis Morrow and T Allan May. Meeting at 7 30 p.m. in the administration building.
Emmanuel R. Robertson 62 of Spring Creek died after a heart attack at the wheel caused his car to slide into Spring Creek on a rural road near Hemlock Lakes Park. Rescuers battled icy water for nearly an hour. He served with Corry Police from 1951 to retirement in year. Survived by wife Vera, daughter Joni Marie, two sons Peter and Gary, and sister Maybell Heltzel. Burial at Spring Creek Cemetery. memorials to Disabled American Veterans and Southwest Indian Foundation.
A 60 year old Cliff Brady fought off a lone gunman who demanded his money, knocking the assailant down twice before the gunman fled. Police reported only minor skin loss to Brady. The Journal later identified a shoe found on a post in Corry as Vincent Catalfa’s, lost weeks earlier near Concord School.
In Buffalo the police demoted 13 narcotics squad members including the commander. Prices for heroin rose from 8 9 to 10 or more per packet as shortages and fear of evidence stockpiling hit the market. A new narcotics squad forms under Capt. Bolas while the county sheriff’s unit remains at 16 members.
Whitehaired 72 year old ex convict Hoover leads a solo campaign for penal reform in Pennsylvania. He travels with a painted car bearing anti prison slogans and writes to inmates in state prisons. Hoover, living on Social Security, argues for more vocational training and mail access while recounting his eight years behind bars and vow to press on.
Washington AP reports a tax cut bill would delay the presidential campaign fund checkoff until 1976. Nixon backs the delay amid a veto threat. the White House hints at possible repeal. The measure lowers personal exemptions and boosts the low income deduction while repealing the automobile excise tax and restoring a 7 percent investment credit.
John F. Norman of Wattsburg sues his former wife Betty M. Norman for non-support, a likely Erie County first. He has custody of three children Jacklyn 17 Lawrence 16 Christine 14, while Betty works at Lake Shore Lumber Co. Norman is unemployed and represented by Bernard Quinn. He appeared at the county nonsupport counseling office on August 30 wearing a neck brace.
An eight point buck that had been tame around 512 Turnpike Road was killed by an unknown hunter. The deer often approached people, seeming unafraid, and drew attention for its prize rack. In other news, Harriet McCormack, wife of former Speaker John W. McCormack, D Mass, died at Providence Hospital at age 67.
