Blue Babies Saved by New Heart Surgery
A medical society reports that blue babies are now being saved from death by heart surgery. A baby born with a heart defect cannot pump enough blood to lungs for oxygen, causing a bluish skin tone and red eyes. Johns Hopkins performed the first operation in 1944, linking the innominate to a pulmonary artery to improve lung blood flow. Chicago surgeons report a newer method connecting the aorta to the left pulmonary artery. The first such operation was on a 21 month old girl, previously fainting during feeds. On September 13 this year a three hour operation was successful and the infant is expected to live.
