Mutiny on the USS Somers Ends with Executions in 1842
In autumn 1842 the brig Somers sailed from New York toward Liberia under Captain Alexander Mackenzie. A plot to seize the ship was halted by a board of inquiry and court martial, leading to the execution by hanging of Philip Spencer and two others, a controversial act that sparked debate over naval law and duty.
