Gasoline tax plan seen as Pinchot compromise in Harrisburg
Pennsylvania House Ways and Means committee altered Governor Pinchot’s plan by proposing a one cent per gallon gasoline tax for six months to provide unemployment relief. The panel also moved to report against the cigarette tax bill 15 to 9. If approved, the amended gasoline tax will mark the first major bill from committee since November 9. Other measures advanced include prosperity bond amendments and a $520,000,000 state loan for emergencies, while several bills faced constitutional doubts from the attorney general. The Senate discussed state cost-cutting moves and confirmed Governor Pinchot’s appointees to property and supplies posts.
