Federal agents seized more than 50 000 worth of rare gold coins from Erie dealer Stephen Juskewycz after a suspected Canada to U S smuggling bid at the Peace Bridge. About 485 coins were found at his Erie home. He is charged with smuggling failing to declare gold and Gold Reserve Act violations and is free on 10 000 bail awaiting grand jury action.

General Electric unveils the U25C diesel electric locomotive for heavy freight. The 2,500 horsepower six axle unit delivers about 80 000 pounds continuous tractive effort and can reach 70 mph, with a three unit consist hauling 40 cars up mountain grades. It uses the same four cycle V type 16 cylinder engine as the U25B and aims to meet heavy construction and fast freight needs.
