Mansfield Texas scenes of mob violence target Negro students as district attorney Grady Meight is mobbed and officials seek additional officers. In Clinton Tennessee, 12 Negro students enter the state funded high school as clashes flare fueled by segregationist agitation from Washington.
State Police report two Somerset youths Frederick Reynolds and William Snyder found an explosive capsule while walking home. They tried to cut it, the cap exploded injuring Reynolds who lost part of his right hand and eye and damaged his left eye. Snyder sustained injuries and was listed in satisfactory condition.
President Eisenhower announced another Soviet atomic explosion, claiming it was more powerful than the prior test and noting it occurred in the southwest Alberta region. He criticized Soviet leaders for pursuing peace talks while continuing tests and said details remain undisclosed. Continued on Page Three.
A Corry survey shows residents spent 12.519 million dollars on food during 1955, with groceries and eating out driving the total. Food accounted for about 80 percent of consumer dollars in Corry, while other sectors such as household equipment and automotive goods also saw strong sales.
Gerald K. Adama, 20, of Union City, pled guilty to prowling in the night and asked for a psychiatric examination. He was held for the next term of court after being identified by the Huberts family in Corry and was taken to the Erie County jail on a $1,000 bond. He faces up to one year in prison or a $1,000 fine.
Erie area suffered a severe storm with heavy rain and lightning. Seven inches of rainfall in 24 hours caused substantial property damage estimated at five thousand dollars, including a barn and sink on Bidder Road and a blaze at the Miles farm. Fire crews from Fairview and West Dee fought the blaze for hours. no livestock were lost though equipment was destroyed.

Bettes submits resignation as executive secretary of the Corry Chamber of Commerce to president Olin Bricken effective immediately. He will join Molded Fiber Boat Company in Union City next Tuesday while the chamber seeks a new secretary or to refund funds raised to date. He plans to stay in Corry and assist the chamber as possible.
Beate Reade a former taxi driver died in Sing Sing Prison electric chair at 11 04 pm after being convicted of first degree murder in Jamestown killings of his sister in law Beverly Reade 26 and her 19 month old daughter Cheryl Lynn. He requested his mother Theodora Kline of Jamestown and spoke with the prison chaplain Luther Hamm during the final hours. Reade was sentenced last November and upheld by appellate courts despite defense claims of doubt.
Four San Quentin inmates escaped by hijacking a plane, diverting it toward Medford Oregon. They then abandoned the aircraft after landing and fled toward nearby towns, evading pursuit. Authorities identified the men as Qere B. Bayieum, 27, Charles Morpun, 35, Paul Marques, 26, and Edward Virgil, 26. Local police followed leads from Medford and Myrtle Creek.
County Highway Superintendent William Pope reports heavy rain washed out two bridges. The larger three ton bridge on Corny Beaverdam road will be replaced as soon as possible and the smaller span on Garter Hill road will be temporarily replaced then fully rebuilt next year. Traffic on both routes is closed except to local residents.
