Pa Farm Column Notes Limited Farm Loans This Year

Harrisburg Aug 31 Farm ownership loans in Pennsylvania by the Farm Security Administration will be cut this year due to a retrenchment in the agency's appropriation. Total loans will aggregate 178 099 compared to 352 120. Growing inflation prompted Congress to reduce the national appropriation from 20 000 000 to 15 000 000. Present price levels may shove the earning power of farming, says state director Carson Merisf. Loans will come from backlog of applications piled up last year when there were 20 applicants. Loans are for working farmers who cannot secure credit elsewhere and must prove character by local farmer committees. Grants run for 40 years at 3 percent interest, with loan sizes limited by county farm size. No loan may exceed 12 000.
