James Will Not Quit Court Post Denies Demand
Arthur James, Republican gubernatorial nominee, refused to resign his 18,000 year term as superior court judge before the November 1 election. He said he would only leave at inauguration day if he defeats Charles Alvin Jones, preventing Gov. Berle from naming a successor. James denied Philadelphia Democratic Chairman John E. Kelly’s charge that he offered backers to give up the seat for $90,000. He called the accusation false and condemned Democratic campaign tactics as a diversion from unemployment and state administration failures.
