The body of Queen Astrid arrived in Brussels and lay in state at Laeken Palace ahead of Tuesday's funeral. Soldiers lined the route from Gare du Nord, with thousands quietly awaiting outside as a guard of honor covered the white shrouded casket.
The Bear Creek sanitary sewer extension received a federal grant of 707 with the city’s share 3264 and about 50 feet remained incomplete. WPA approved other work including four wooden bridges replaced by four concrete ones in Albion with federal 2044 and sponsor 1581, plus repairs to broken concrete walks at Erie with federal 1080 and Brie's 633.
Nine residents of the Clymer area charged with disturbing the peace over an outbreak at a Clymer Hill farm home had the preliminary hearing postponed. The case now resumes as a major hearing Thursday September 12 before Justice of the Peace Rev. T. K. Whippo with a jury.
Erie enacts plan to purchase extra voting machines due to increased enrollment. The law requires two machines per district with 600 or more voters, so Erie will add none beyond the required number for the primary.
Fifteen thousand Pennsylvania and Maryland National Guardsmen completed a two week training stint at Indiantown Gap and Mt Gretna today. First regiments prepared to depart for home tonight while regular troops of the third corps were to stay through next week. Demonstrations of combat and defense maneuvers were performed during the encampment.
The Works Progress Administration announced approval of an additional list of WPA projects in Pennsylvania and allocated 25,551,000 as the federal share. Local sponsors will provide 3,008,402, with total project costs at 29,954,339. Edward N. Jones, state WPA chief, will select projects for completion to speed the program.
The Pennsylvania Railroad announced a new cash and delivery service to extend its state mail delivery plan. It begins Sunday and benefits medium sized mail stores by expanding their sales area without extra facility needs.
Field of eight aircraft from the United States and beyond contest the Bendix trophy during a four day air race starting in Cleveland. Benny Howard of Chicago leads the first arrivals from Los Angeles with a 1 40 finish as crews seek prize money and a shot at transcontinental records amid trials and fatalities.
A benefit dance to aid Corry Hospital is planned for Saturday evening at the Corry Country Club. Miss Ingeborg Seiberg reports ticket sales strong with expectation of a large attendance. Victor Dietael and his orchestra will play from 7 to 9 o'clock with specialty features during the program. Proceeds will fund hospital supplies.
President Roosevelt signs the Guffey coal bill in a ceremony with legislators present. Witnesses include John Lewis of the United Mine Workers and Senators Alden Barkley and Matthew Neely. Lewis indicates UMWA will resume negotiations with mine operators on September 5.
Labor Day will be celebrated in Columbus with one of the largest programs yet. The Elmer Carrier Past No 365 of Camry and the Columbus Mens Club sponsor a daylong event with boxing bouts, pony rides, booths, and a large platform for entertainment. A morning opening, tents, and roasts are planned, with athletic events for children and various races for all ages. Continued on Page Five.
Nearly 20,000 Perry residents joined crowds at the Wattsburg Fair yesterday. Officials reported the largest attendance in the fair’s history as crowds filled the grounds through the afternoon and evening. The fair continues this afternoon and evening before closing tonight.
Finances for Corty Public Schools depend on a 50 million tax anticipation note issue. The Commonwealth has readvertised bids with notes secured by current biennial revenues. State aid payments and the 1935-26 allocations hinge on the new financing plan as sealed bids open at noon Thursday in the governor’s executive offices.
The Corry Baptist Church voted unanimously to withdraw from the Northern Baptist Convention after a long debate over modernism and liberalism. The church traced its struggle since 1920 with Oil Creek and Pennsylvania Baptist bodies and urged leaving those that have become unbaptistic. The meeting, led by C. S. Monroe, also noted that about $600 was given to missions last year.

Charles H. Geiger, manager of the Corry School District, sustained a deep head gash and sprained left arm in a morning fall at the Concord school building. He was taken home to 7 East Smith Street and is resting after the shock.
Cecil Allen, entrant in the Bendix national air derby, died when his Gee Bee No. 7 crashed shortly after takeoff from Union airport Los Angeles. The accident occurred about three miles from the starting point as he departed in the race’s fastest plane. The event was held at Van Nuys with news reports confirming the deadly crash.
The school board meets in special session to discuss the WPA situation and alleged excessive charges in collecting show taxes. Finances are tight as projects near the September 10 deadline at Harrisburg, with a plan to seek financing options. Tax Collector George Gordon may appear to explain penalties on delinquents. DAIRYMEN MEET also noted for Wednesday at the McCray Community House with cake to be shared.

Harrisburg August 30 The Public Service Commission widened its inquiry into utilities, targeting the Associated Gas and Electric Company and its Pennsylvania affiliates. The panel ordered show cause why penalties should not be imposed for alleged violations, while reviewing Pennsylvania Power and Light matters and a new rate schedule to cut revenue. Governor Earle supported the action as aligned with state policy amid ongoing inventory and property appraisals to curb overvaluation and unjust charges.
Special registration at the municipal building continues after noon and evening Tuesday. In Corry the GOP margin narrowed to eighty with 34 voters enrolled Thursday at the Mare Hitipal building. Democrats lead 1958 to 1270 overall. Registrations on Thursday included 25 Democrats and 8 Republicans with one Prohibitionist. Special registrars Mrs Walter H Ellis and Mrs Boxy Inley will continue to assist from 1 to 10 o'clock daily through Saturday and Tuesday. Any voter who missed regular days may roll at the city hall.
