Fire cannon prank prompts police warning and delay tactic
Acting Police Chief Sgt James Keppel described how pranksters delay explosions by lighting a cigarette and pushing the fuse from the cannon. He warned officers could have been burned or the car ignited if the patrol car arrived seconds later. Keppel says investigators are pursuing the incident and promises no leniency as authorities examine the latest in a string of park cannon pranks.

Buses Planes Full During Rail Strike
OTTAWA Thousands of Canadians jammed bus and air terminals as the government prepared legislation to end the rail strike. About 118000 union workers demanded a 20 percent raise and rejected a 12 percent offer over two years. Parliament would consider two government bills to restore service and ease freight-rate rules. Mediation talks were set to resume after the measures. The strike threatened layoffs shortages and price hikes if it continued. Transport officials urged shipments of essentials and perishables first as extra runs were added to handle the 70000 daily rail riders. The 17 unions reported average wages around 2.32 dollars per hour amid opposition from John G Liefenbaker and the Progressive Conservatives.
