Congress Turns A Jaundiced Eye On Publicity Staffs
The article reports Congress voting to cut government information staffs by 25 percent for fiscal year 1952 with defense staff exceptions, amid a broader push by Byrd and party lines. It notes Senate approval 63 to 10, party splits, and potential similar cuts for armed services pending further action. The House last week adopted Smith amendment restricting funds for domestic information personnel.

Byrd Amendment Kept On Publicity and Information Push
The Byrd anti publicity amendment was added to bills funding the Federal Security Agency and Agriculture Department. Critics say agencies use funds to promote compulsory medical insurance, Brannan farm plan, and flood relief actions. The Office of Price Stabilization seeks 3 126 881 for its information branch in 1952, a modest sum likely to shrink after Congress. A 1913 law restricts hiring a federal publicity expert without explicit congressional funding, so many staff hold the title information specialist.
