Pilot Dipped Jet Low Before Fatal Crash
The National Transportation Safety Board said the Allegheny Airlines Convair 580 descended below a safe altitude during an instrument approach to New Haven airport last June. Pilot David G. Eastridge was killed, 26 passengers and stewardess Judith Manning also died, with two passengers and the co-pilot among the survivors. The board urged fuel-inerting systems and noted prior landing delays may have influenced the descent and timing, but found no conclusive evidence of a motive.
