North holds the long spades and leads a spade. Duck the first spade to sever North–South spade communication, then, if North started with four to six spades, you can still make three no trump. If North has five or more spades, the duck increases your chances of nine or more tricks. Proceed to draw trumps and finesse diamonds to secure twelve tricks or concede a diamond when needed to guarantee the contract.
