Nationalists Foil New Red Attempts To Seize Islands
Formosa (AP) The Chinese Communists slackened attacks on Quemoy and Tan Islands after a weekend of heavy bombardment and air sea activity. Nationalists said a seaborne Communist effort to seize Tungting Island, 17 miles south of Quemoy, was repelled Sunday night. Chiang Kai-shek's forces claimed two MIGs shot down in a dog fight over Quemoy. It was the largest single engagement of Communist aircraft over the Formosa Strait to date. The Nationalist defense ministry reported heavy artillery shelling by both sides with thousands of rounds fired over the weekend, then reduced activity in the morning and afternoon.
