Senate May Sustain Cut in Kennedy Foreign Aid Plan

Washington iap Senate Republican leader Everett Dirksen predicted the Senate may sustain the House cut of 585 million from Kennedy foreign aid. Kennedy called the move short-sighted and partisan as Republicans and conservative Democrats won a 222 188 vote to slice the amount. The House then passed the bill 224 186, sending a 3.5 billion ceiling to the Senate. Kennedy urged bold action to restore authorization. Dirksen said the mood is against long-running aid and excessive spending. The action followed months of negotiations, with the committee already trimming Kennedy’s request by 200 million and a desire by Sen Morse to push for further reductions. Kennedy blamed Republicans for the House action and noted his past support for aid under Eisenhower.
