Draft calls shift to older ages as needs rise
The Selective Service director announced 26 year olds will be called first, followed by older groups in descending age order. Estimates show only 7,000 to 8,000 of 25 year olds may be inductable, while 22 to 24 year olds mostly defer. The burden falls on 19 to 22 year olds, with about 500,000 in the youngest group potentially inductable, depending on military needs. Navy and Air Force foresee no draftees early, Army projects up to 250,000 in year one, possibly delaying tapping the youngest groups until 1950.
