Newsprint Supply and Prices Across Nations in 1940s
Global newsprint consumption surged in 1937 while U S use rose 34 percent from 1939 to 1947 as European output sagged. Domestic U S production grew seven percent from 1946 to 1947 with new mills in Texas and Alabama planned for 1949 or 1950. Prices hit a high in August with a base jump to 101 per ton, though the Commerce Department noted some easing. Supreme Court basing point rulings could keep prices high for large buyers.
