Reds Close Last Door To Freedom
The Red regime made East Berlin the capital and allowed East Germans to slip into West Berlin. Refugees mingled with West Berliners and used lax controls to reach West Germany, aided by allied protections. Fears of a separate peace treaty and West Berlin by Soviet threats spurred a mass exodus, peaking at over 2,000 daily before Aug. 13, undermining Communist claims of a better life.
