Mine Strikes Spread Through Pennsylvania Mines

More than 10 800 Pennsylvania miners stayed away from war vital work as strikes grew. Pilot Croft Is War Prisoner In German Camp

A report from the Casualties Office of the Canadian Air Force via the Red Cross states Pilot Officer George A. Croft survived his downed aircraft and is a prisoner in a German camp. Croft, a Corry High School graduate, has served with the Canadian Air Force since 1942 and recently completed his 22nd mission. His parents in Royston have waited for word since July and now rejoice at the news of his capture and condition.

Mead Park Pond Swimming Banned Amid Polio Fears

At a special Mead Park council meeting mayor Hepler moved to end swimming in the pond due to a spreading polio epidemic. Tech Sergeant Awarded Silver Star in Italy

Tech Sergeant Wilbert E. Black of Beaver Pennsylvania received the Silver Star posthumously for gallantry with the 45th Thunderbird Division on the Fifth Army front in Italy. He and three others climbed a steep embankment to attack a superior enemy force, killing four Germans, capturing one, and taking four enemy machine guns and five mines. The action is believed to have halted an enemy advance.
