Turkey Ready To Negotiate Cyprus Says Ecevit In Ankara
Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit said Turkey is ready for reasonable changes to the demarcation line in Cyprus and optimistic talks can restart. He met British Ambassador Horace Philips for 45 minutes in Ankara and said he could meet Greek Premier Constantine Caramanlis anywhere, anytime. Ecevit called for immediate negotiations with Greek Cypriots Greece and Britain, stressed separate areas for Greek and Turkish Cypriots, and noted the Turkish Cypriot community numbers 120,000 against 520,000 Greek Cypriots. He said the Turks occupy over a third of the island with a northeast boundary from Lefka to Famagusta, and UN peacekeepers have been withdrawn from Famagusta. Sources in Ankara said Turkey plans a self-sufficient Turkish Cypriot state while aiming for a federation, with a special government commission overseeing the program.

Shapp Tax Records Subpoenaed in Pennsylvania
Gov. Shapp faces a September 5 deadline to respond to a House committee subpoena for his income tax records in a state contract practices probe. The Republican panel voted 4 3 along party lines to issue it, while Shapp and allies call for testimony and argue the move is politically motivated. Attorney Alex Satinsky handles the matter for Shapp. The dispute could reach court if needed, with prior state Supreme Court precedent cited but not controlling, as the subpoena targets records rather than testimony.
