Pirates Lose as Grimsley Tames Them 6 0 and NL Race Shrinks
In a Friday baseball slate, the Pirates were blanked 6 0 by pitcher Ross Grimsley as Chicago swept Houston to tighten the NL mast edge. Montreal beat San Francisco 4 1, San Diego edged New York 3 2, and Los Angeles rallied to trim the West lead with a 9 5 win over Philadelphia. Ferguson Jenkins earned his 20th victory as Chicago beat Cleveland, while J C Martin and Richie Allen fueled Chicago and the Dodgers respectively in other late games. The Dodgers' win plus Montreal’s triumph reduced L A’s West deficit to 6 1/2 games. In football, Steelers coach Chuck Noll undecided on QB for Monday's exhibition versus the Bengals. Virgil Carter, Ken Anderson, and Terry Hanratty could all see time.

Beathard to Start as Cardinals Face Redskins in Exhibition
Former USC star quarterback Pete Beathard, who logged only 17 passes for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1970, is set to start and likely throw more than 17 in tonight’s exhibition at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium against the Washington Redskins. Beathard will attempt to outplay Jim Hart, who led the club a week ago in a 16-14 preseason win over Houston, as the Cards preview their opener with Washington on Sept. 12.
