Say Overly Refined Foods Responsible For Disease
CHICAGO RP Overly refined foods linked to diseases of Western civilization from heart disease to obesity in a study from South Africa. Researchers Burkitt Painter Walker note refined diets remove indigestible fibers, increasing bowel transit time and bulk. Cereal fiber supposedly aids digestion, reduces bile salts, and lowers cholesterol. In Africa, coarser grains correspond with rare disease rates, while Western diets show rising cases. The authors warn that cereal fiber affects intestinal chemistry and may help prevent colon cancer and arterial disease.
