Pittsburgh Press strike talks resume under White House push
In Pittsburgh, the Press Co and its striking printers union planned another meeting to end a 97 day walkout. International Typographical Union Local 7 president John Feigel said workers will not return without a new contract or court order. A White House aide urged publication of the Pittsburgh Press and Post Gazette during the 90 day wage and price freeze, with any wage increases effective after the period. Feigel noted the workers were covered by the freeze but not ordered back. The dispute began May 14, blocking the city’s daily papers. Separately in Dallas the police chief cut the minimum patrolman height by an inch to 5 feet 6 inches to attract Mexican-Americans, but none have joined.
