Soviet court convicts Francis Gary Powers for the U2 flight, sentencing him to ten years in prison with the first three years to be served in jail and the rest in unspecified detention. The verdict follows a four hour and thirty five minute deliberation as the courtroom applauds and Powers expresses remorse and requests fair treatment.

WENATCHEE Was h AP Police investigate the death of Clarence Hudson 66 a department store janitor found in his apartment sitting in a homemade electric chair. A ground wire clutched in his hand connected to a transformer via 25 cent pieces taped to his temples and wet towels at his feet and head. The transformer allegedly boosted voltage from a nine volt outlet.
Wilmont Minnesota six people died in a highway crash six days ago leaving 38 orphans. The town with 437 residents is forming an orphans fund led by local papers and Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. Donations are arriving from community groups and a Worthington supermarket will host an all day luncheon to support the effort.
