Amtrak Faces First-Year Losses and Recovery Hope
In our view Amtrak has not been a success in its first year of operation. The deficit stands at 111 million dollars, though after federal payments the loss is about 43 million dollars less than expected. The NY to Washington corridor remains the sole consistently profitable route due to density and travel distance. Congress should sustain generous support to give Amtrak a real chance to improve nationwide rail passenger service.
