Training Begins For Guardsmen Encampment At Indiantown Gap
About 11 000 members of the 28th Infantry Division and other units began a two week summer encampment at Indiantown Gap Pa with a tactical training period. Gov John S Fine praised the officers for readiness and noted the division's reactivation and rebuilding. Additional guardsmen from the Best Anti Aircraft Artillery Brigade and air units trained at Ft Miles Bethany Beach Reading and Stewart AFB New York bringing total personnel well above 20 000 across locations.

Dick Kemp, 14, won the 17th All American Soap Box Derby at Akron with a 27.80 second final heat racing a blue $9.40 car. He earned a $5,000 college scholarship, carrying a silver dollar and red feather moccasins for luck, finishing ahead of Gary Miller and John Kirtley in a tight podium.
