Pro-Red Labor Leader Given Year in Jail
Charles A. Doyle a 44 year old Buffalo labor leader was found guilty in Jamestown on August 2 of illegal entry into the United States. He was sentenced in Buffalo yesterday to one year in the federal correctional institution at Dartbury Conn fined 500 dollars and ordered deported. Doyle was returned to his bail raised from 2000 to 36000 pending appeal and was held in the custody of the United States marshal. The sentence was handed by Federal District Judge John Knight who presided at the Jamestown trial. He had been the international vice president of the CIO Chemical Workers Union and had faced deportation proceedings on Communist sympathies. The case followed an injunction stalling deportation and relates to false statements and withheld information when reentering the United States in January 1948 after a Windsor Ontario labor meeting. The article notes the word artillery as the origin of an era of missiles.
