Hot Dry Weather Shrinks Pennsylvanias Potatoes
Harrisburg reports Pennsylvania potato prospects shrink under hot dry weather. Agriculture Secretary Miles Horst notes widespread 90 degree heat drying central and southeastern fields, yielding small, poorly formed tubers. A statewide survey by the Pennsylvania Cooperative Potato Growers Association forecasts 20 percent below decade average production, with the Federal-State Crop Reporting Service estimating 19,408,000 bushels as of August 1, down 852,000 from July. Rainfall since August 1 has been far below normal, except in Potter County where conditions are slightly better, while some northern counties saw more rain but short-lived. Even if total output is well below last year’s average of 28,000,000 bushels, it remains about 2,404,000 bushels above acting production in other months.
