Search Atlantic For 99 Plane Victims
SHANNON Ireland AP All hope was given up today of finding any survivors among the 99 persons aboard the Dutch airliner that crashed in the stormy Atlantic off Ireland s coast. Twenty four bodies were recovered from a square mile of wreckage where the four engine plane went down in bad weather before dawn Thursday about 100 miles west of Ireland. It seems extremely unlikely there will be any survivors, a KLM spokesman said. Flight 607E from Amsterdam to New York was last heard from 35 minutes after taking off from Shannon Airport for Gander after a refueling stop. Capt P A Roelofs radioed that it was flying normally at 16000 feet then silence. The British radar spotted wreckage later. The crash would be the highest toll of any single plane commercial accident. The American bolt, Super-Constellation was the first commercial plane to go down at sea on the North Atlantic route.
