Aug. 15 The neck and neck race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination between Congressman James T. Begg of Sandustky and Myers Cooper of Cincinnati tightened as returns from 769 precincts showed Begg leading by about 24 000 with 221 871 votes to Cooper 207 6027.
President Coolidge addressing about 15 000 at the Wisconsin American Legion convention praised the Kellogg anti war treaty as a major step toward international peace since World War I. He and his party, including Mrs Coolidge, arrived after an overnight rail journey to Marathon County fairgrounds where Mark Schneller introduced him.
The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey announces an extra dividend of 42 1/2 cents and the regular quarterly dividend of 25 cents on common stock, payable September 15. Record date is August 25.
Buffalo August 15 Coast Guard shell fire sinks one rum runner and forces another to surrender after a Lake Erie chase from Buffalo to near Dunkirk. Two Buffalo men aboard the sunken craft are held in Dunkirk. Niagara Falls men connected with the captured boat’s crew are in custody. Coast Guardsmen Henry Lill and Andy Anderson were injured by flying glass. A 300 case seizure was reported.
New York August 15 Chairman Town Raskob of the Democratic Action committee studies a farm relief plan. It would form a financing cooperative by wealthy friends to provide 2 million dollars working capital and hold and market crops for the farmers. The plan aims to offer immediate relief during the campaign and involves bankers and farm leaders in discussions of financing and marketing to secure best prices.
Favored by pleasant weather the seventeenth annual reunion at Columbus drew many former residents to Mather Parks. The Coleman Hoseline of Union City provided shade and a full entertainment program was planned. A reunion business meeting will name officers for the upcoming year. Baseball featured a morning attraction between the Company A nine and the High Stars of the Industrial League. Two boys from Zelienople drowned while wading in a local creek near Butler yesterday.
The city barber shops announce pricing changes with a two bit shave in place of the former dime rate. A nickel rise to twenty five cents for face work accompanies shorter shop hours from 6 am opening to 7 pm closing. No major increases in other services are noted though shampoo and other grooming fees rise modestly. The House of David attendance and barber patronage are not expected to change significantly.
United Press reports no further attempts will be made to initiate the wage dispute between trainmen and railroad officials west of Chicago. A Whitney of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen says 25,000 members and conductors are voting on a strike, with results to be announced in September. He notes a general strike could affect major lines and mentions proposed pay increases and rule changes as conditions for arbitration.
City residents are urged to attend a large Dollar Day sale staged by Corry merchants tomorrow. Special offers were advertised in Tuesday's Journal and many merchants are cooperatively joining the event to attract shoppers from the district.
Harrisburg reports the Bureau of Public Accident statistics show 86 deaths from grade crossing collisions in the first half of 1928, up from 76 in the same period last year. Of the deceased, 64 were automobile passengers, among a total of 488 grade crossing incidents.
